This article shows some hi-res photos of the Commodore &ldquo;IEEE-488 cartridge&rdquo;, which made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pagetable.com\/?p=1023\">faster PET drives<\/a> available for the C64.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"Photos\">Photos<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/ieee488cart.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/ieee488cart_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The IEEE-488 cartridge is connected to the expansion port of the C64.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/top.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/top_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It has a pass-through expansion connector at the top, which allows using certain additional cartridges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/side.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/side_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The IEEE-488 connector is on the side. This is the edge connector version, like on the PET.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/adapter.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/adapter_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If all you have is a <a href=\"http:\/\/store.go4retro.com\/ieee-488-3-cable\/\">standard IEEE-488 cable<\/a>, you can use the adapter from <a href=\"http:\/\/store.go4retro.com\/ieee-cable-adapter\/\">RETRO Innovations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/front.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/front_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The two main chips on the board (ASSY NO 250418 REV.A, P\/N NO 250411 REV.B) are a MOS 6525A TPI (&ldquo;Tri-Port Interface&rdquo;) I\/O controller with 24 GPIOs, and a 4 KB EPROM. The contents are available on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zimmers.net\/anonftp\/pub\/cbm\/schematics\/cartridges\/c64\/ieee-488\/index.html\">zimmers.net<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/back.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"docs\/ieee488cart\/back_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back side reveals that the sockets of the four smaller chips of this cartridge have been added later by the user. U6 has probably been replaced: Originally, it should have been a MOS 7713 part.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"Alternatives\">Alternatives<\/h2>\n<p>These Commodore cartridges are rather rare these days, but<br \/>\n* There were several (historic) third party cartridges with the same functionality.<br \/>\n* <a href=\"https:\/\/dl2dw.de\/bastelprojekte\/commodore\/45-nachbau-der-iec64-ieee-488-karte-fuer-den-commodore-c64-und-c128\">DL2DW<\/a> describes how to build your own.<br \/>\n* <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polyplay.xyz\/IEEE-488-Bus-Cartridge-Commodore-64_1\">PolyPlay<\/a> sells new cartridges.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"Emulation\">Emulation<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/vice-emu.sourceforge.net\">VICE<\/a> emulator allows you to add the Commodore IEEE-488 cartridge to your configuration by attaching the EPROM as a cartridge image and hinting to VICE that it&rsquo;s the IEEE cartridge.
